- Boris Johnson resigned on Thursday as leader of Britain’s Conservative party, paving the way for the selection of a new Prime Minister after dozens of Ministers quit his government over 48 hours.

- External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi held talks on the side lines of the G-20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Bali. “EAM [External Affairs Minister] called for an early resolution of all the outstanding issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. Recalling the disengagement achieved in some friction areas, EAM reiterated the need to sustain the momentum to complete disengagement from all the remaining areas to restore peace and tranquillity in the border areas,” a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

- The court said that the “menace of fake currency notes is a threat to the economic stability of the country”. Additional Sessions Judge also rejected a plea for leniency towards the woman on account of her gender, noting, “Convict Neetu despite being a woman has voluntarily chosen to associate herself with nefarious criminal activities and now she cannot claim any preferential treatment on account of her gender.

- The Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to exempt the State from declaring Eco sensitive zones (ESZ) of one km around wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. It also called for legislation that could enable the State to overcome the Supreme Court directive in this regard.

- The Union Environment Ministry, tasked with safeguarding India’s forests and its environmental assets, proposes to amend sections of key environmental legislation and make them less threatening to potential violators. India has eight cornerstone pieces of legislation that define a regulatory framework to ensure that natural resources are not wantonly exploited, acts of pollution are apprehended and there is a mechanism to punish and deter violators. Under provisions in the existing legislation, violators are punishable with imprisonment up to five years or with a fine up to one lakh rupees, or with both.

- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari approved a Draft GSR (general statutory rules) Notification seeking comments on a proposal to introduce the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat-NCAP). New Car Assessment Programs (NCAP) provide reliable information about the crash safety of a vehicle based on certain common criteria and procedures. This then helps vehicles acquire a foothold in international markets. Bharat NCAP would assign vehicles between one and five stars on parameters such as Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP) and Safety Assist Technologies (SAT).

Representatives of Bangladesh and the Seychelles — the two observer nations in the conclave — also shared their views on the occasion.
