  • The Centre’s policy think tank NITI Aayog has recommended steps to provide social security, including paid leave, occupational disease and accident insurance, support during irregularity of work and pension plans for the country’s gig workforce, which is expected to grow to 2.35 crore by 2029-30. According to a study released by NITI Aayog on Monday, the number of gig workers is estimated to be 77 lakhs in 2020-21. “India requires a framework that balances the flexibility offered by platforms while also ensuring social security of workers. The think tank has also recommended introducing a ‘Platform India initiative’ on the lines of the ‘Start-up India initiative’.

At a special session of the G7 summit in Germany, he said the clean energy sector had emerged as a major domain in India and developed economies should invest in this arena.

  • The Water Resources Department (WRD) has written to the Andhra Pradesh government to suspend Krishna water supply from the Kandaleru reservoir as two city reservoirs are filled up, the shutter gates of Chembarambakkam reservoir were opened to release water as a precautionary measure when the city received heavy rains. The department let out a small quantum of water. The recently- built Thervoykandigai-Kannankottai reservoir is full.

  • Higher education policy planners and regulators are busy giving shape to the digital university, which was announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget. Though still on the drawing board, the digital university is expected to offer any number, kind, and type of course without limits on intake, in a hybrid or ‘physical plus digital’ mode. It proclaims to provide equitable access to quality higher education and employability enhancing skill development programmes to all.

  • The conviction of Sajid Mir, described by the U.S. as the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is the most significant action taken by Pakistan against Mir. According to the U.S. treasury department in 2012, Mir “trained and provided guidance to the operatives involved in the attacks and directed the execution of hostages taken during the operation”. Since June 2018, Pakistan has been on the “grey” list of the FATF. The conviction of Mir is a step forward in convincing the FATF and its affiliated bodies that Pakistan is serious about addressing concerns involving terror financing.

  • On June 20, the Vedanta Group put out an advertisement which said that Sterlite Copper, Thoothukudi is up for sale. In 2018, after the company announced that it would be enhancing its capacity, large-scale protests from local and neighbouring localities broke out. On May 22, the protests turned violent and the police open fired which led to the death of 13 civilians. A week later the Tamil Nadu government sealed the plant. Since the shutdown of the plant, India has shifted from being a large net exporter of refined copper to now being a net importer of copper.
  1. When defection is a mere detour for an MLA

  • The most prominent case of political defection was that of Haryana’s Gaya Lal, originally an independent MLA who, in 1967, juggled between the Congress and Janata Party for two weeks. The recurrence of this phenomenon led to the 1985 Anti-Defection Law. The Anti-Defection Law provided a safeguard for defections made on genuine ideological differences. It accepted “split” within a party if at least one-third of the members of the legislative party defect, and allowed the formation of a new party or “merger” with other political party if not less than two thirds of the party’s members commit to it. Defections like these can only be stopped by extending the disqualification period from re-contesting to at least six years.

  • Also known as the socialist calculation debate, this refers to an important academic debate on the question of whether centrally planned economies can allocate scarce resources efficiently. It should be remembered that resources in any economy are scarce when compared to the unlimited desires of human beings. So, these limited resources need to be allocated towards the most urgent needs of society in order to maximise social welfare.

  • India and the European Union (EU) resumed negotiations, after a gap of over eight years, for a comprehensive free trade agreement, a move aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two regions. India had started negotiations for a trade pact with the EU in 2007, but the talks stalled in 2013 as both sides failed to reach an agreement on key issues.
  1. World Bank approves $250-mn loan to boost India’s road safety

  • The World Bank has approved a $250 million loan to support the Government of India’s road safety programme for seven States under which a single accident reporting number will be set up to better manage post-crash events. The project will also establish a national harmonised crash database system in order to analyse accidents and use that to construct better and safer roads. The project will also provide incentives to States to leverage private funding through public private partnership (PPP) concessions and pilot initiatives.
